When I was a kid, my grandma, a lovely little lady with a beautiful Indian accent, always had dessert after dinner.
But she didn’t have it every night. She waited for the one she really wanted – Viennetta.
In Australia, it was a frozen vanilla ice cream cake with chocolate layers. Looked fancy. Tasted even better. Everyone who didn’t know thought it was expensive, but it was actually pretty cheap.
If it wasn’t that she’d skip it.
“No thanks,” she’d say. “I’ll wait for the good stuff.”
That stuck with me.
Because that’s what balance really is, not giving in just because something’s there. Not saying yes to every craving under the banner of “moderation.”
It’s about holding out.
It’s about recognizing what’s actually worth it and letting the rest pass by.
Every urge doesn’t need your attention.
And every “pretty good” option doesn’t need a yes.
Balance isn’t just permission to have everything, it’s the discipline to choose what matters most.
And that discipline takes practice.
It’s not easy, especially when you’re hungry for progress and tempted by quick fixes. But the body and life you want won’t be built on shortcuts.
So no, I’m not saying never have dessert.
I’m saying wait for the one that’s worth it.
That’s how you build something better, not by grabbing what’s good enough, but by choosing what’s great.
