Last week, one of my clients messaged me after doing 45 minutes of cardio. She said, “Surely I’ve burned enough to lose fat now, right?”
I get it. Cardio feels like the hard part, so it must be the thing that burns fat.
However, it’s way easier to eat 300 fewer calories than it is to try and burn 300 extra calories through cardio.
In fact, the calories you burn during exercise are only a small part of the total your body burns each day. Most of it comes from just existing, your body ticking over, keeping you alive.
So, if you’re trying to lose fat, the biggest lever is your diet. Cardio can help a little, but it’s not the main thing. It’s like a cherry on top, not the whole sundae.
You can do hours of cardio and still gain fat if you’re eating too much. That’s why it’s important to focus on:
– Eating fewer calories than their body needs
– Getting enough protein so you can stick to the calorie deficit easier
– Eating enough fat to keep their hormones happy
– And being generally active throughout the day
Cardio is great for your heart, but if fat loss is your goal, your food matters way more.
